Deception

Dear Friends,

I was reading on from our motto text in 1 Peter 2:21 about Jesus Christ, our example to follow. It said “He committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth.” It got me thinking about a verse in the Bible (which I find very scary) that in these end times, many will be deceived, even the very elect of God. Jesus tells us where this deceit will come from, Satan himself, the Deceiver who is the Father of lies. It would be tempting to think that we could never be hoodwinked or tricked, but as humans we know that we need to stay close to Jesus, to God’s Word of Truth and to make sure all we do is what He would want to lead us in.

Deception comes in all sorts of ways, and increasingly in the past few years the Church seems to be in great danger of falling in with the world in many of its beliefs. One of these is Alternative Therapies and Healing Methods. The disturbing thing is that these things are being offered at our doctors’ surgeries with no scientific proof of how they work, (sometimes they seem to for a while). I was recently offered acupuncture and Tai Chi lessons for a back problem which I politely refused, because thankfully I have been alerted to the spiritual belief system behind these treatments. Instead I accepted some temporary pain relief, some advice about posture and exercise and I prayed and asked God to help heal me, which thankfully He did.

It is understandable when we are in distress that we can get desperate for help, but let’s remember to seek the Lord and His ways. I remember being taught that when the enemy deceives he is like a fisherman offering some lovely new bait in front of a fish who is hungry. There looks nothing wrong with what’s offered, it seems good and will satisfy the longing, but in taking what is offered the hook goes in and the fish is caught out and often devoured. Remember what the Bible says, that Satan is on the lookout for someone to devour! Many New Age and Alternative Therapies believe in an invisible force, that Yin and Yan are opposing forces. There are beliefs about channelling into this force. Don’t fall for this! As Christians we believe in the God who created the heavens and the earth.

A personal God who loves and cares for us, who sent His Son to redeem us and bring us back into a personal relationship with Him. The God who heals us and says “Call to Me and I will answer you.”

Listen to His Word…. “But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.” (1 Tim.4:1). Difficult times will come “But evil men and imposters will proceed from bad to worse deceiving and being deceived. But you, continue in the things you have learned and are convinced of, knowing from whom you have learnt them.” (“All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for…) 2 Tim. 3 “Let no one deceive you with empty words…Do not be partakers with them…And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness (hidden things), but instead expose them.” (Eph. 5:6).

If I have raised any concern or questions through this letter and you would like to talk or pray about it please contact me. I am writing this on Valentines Day and want to say God loves you…and I do too!

God bless you,

Janet
